Everything Bagel Seasoning

Jump to Recipe

Who else is addicted to Everything Bagel Seasoning? If you’re not, perhaps we should apologize because you likely will be soon. We were inspired by Trader Joe’s Everything but the Bagel Sesame Seasoning (who else loves Joe?!), but we like this DIY version even better! It’s salty, savory, crunchy, and making it at home means you can use fresher ingredients.

This seasoning is the ultimate versatile topping — perfect for avocado toast, eggs, bowls, crackers, and beyond! Plus, it’s SO easy to prepare — just 6 ingredients, 1 bowl, and 5 minutes required. Let’s do this!

What is in Everything Bagel Seasoning?

  • Sesame seeds – black and white sesame seeds make a beautiful color contrast, but you can choose to use just one color if you’re looking for simplicity.
  • Sea salt flakes – large, flaky sea salt like Maldon is the key to more dispersed saltiness plus a pleasant crunch. Regular sea salt will also work, but you’ll want to use less of it!
  • Dried minced garlic – also called dehydrated garlic, it’s a little golden in color and the key for garlicky zing and a slight toasty flavor!
  • Dried minced onion – just like dried garlic vs. garlic powder, dried minced onion will be larger in size than onion powder and contribute a pleasant savory taste.
  • Poppy seeds – for an extra crunch factor, we went heavier on these than the Trader Joe’s Everything But the Bagel Seasoning!

How to Make Everything Bagel Seasoning

It couldn’t be easier to make Everything Bagel Seasoning at home:

  1. Gather your ingredients – poppy seeds, sesame seeds, dried onion and garlic, and flaky salt! If you have trouble finding any of them, check the bulk spices aisle — there’s usually more variety and fresher ingredients.
  2. Add them to a jar (or bowl).
  3. Shake them up (or mix).
  4. Enjoy!

SO GOOD! I love everything bagel seasoning – on everything – and this was delicious. Had my first taste of it in NYC and tried to find some in OZ, but there were very few places that sold it. I did find it, but it wasn’t earth shattering. THIS is earth shattering. I put it on top of Vegemite toast (Vegemite is an Aussie spread which is a “love it or hate it”. I love it!) and avocado toast. Sprinkled on top of arugula and put it in olive oil & dipped bread into it. Thank you thank you thank you for another delicious, stunning recipe which has already been added to my recipe binder!

I appreciate your efforts on all these spice mixes.
Lets me be able to decide which ingredients to include, and which to exclude – cause of allergies – and I still get to try new spices! :)

Just a heads up, if you say, are going for a job interview, and they may require drug testing before hiring,
    Do Not Eat Poppy Seeds!
At least for one day beforehand, or you may possibly get the wrong result!

(I’m not guessing, I’ve known it to happen to some people. )

Thanks for this recipe. It’s so dramatically colorful! It seems perfect. I wonder if the addition of Kalonji seeds would be nice. They are often used on bread as a topping. And in Indian cooking. The are also mistakenly called black cumin. They are also called nigella seeds or by its scientific name Nigella sativa – They are NOT related to nor taste like cumin but they have that as a nickname, I guess.

Question- should I be using toasted sesame seeds or just as is from their container? Thanks for this recipe!!

    • Support @ Minimalist Bakersays

We use untoasted for ease, but toasted would be delicious too! Hope you love it!

Yum! I recently went wild and used my Everything Bagel mix on a baked tuna loin (kinda like a crust) and it was amazing!!! highly recommend it with tuna.
