How to Make the Best Smoothies

Have you ever ordered a smoothie at a café or juice shop and wondered how they get it so thick, creamy, and balanced? It’s all about:

  1. Having a high-speed blender (see our unbiased blender review here!)
  2. Starting with less liquid and adding more as needed
  3. Finding your favorite flavor combinations (recipes below!)

How to Freeze Bananas For Smoothies

Frozen bananas are a smoothie’s best friend. They add a nearly unmatchable creaminess and natural sweetness and make your smoothie perfectly chilled without the need to dilute the flavor with ice.

To freeze bananas for smoothies, it’s best to use ones that are ripe (yellow) with some brown spots, but not overripe or mushy. We like to slice them in 1-inch pieces, transfer to a silicone- or parchment-lined baking sheet or plate, and freeze until firm. This prevents them from sticking together, and the smaller pieces are easier on your blender’s motor. Once frozen, transfer them to a sealed bag where they’ll keep for about 1 month.

P.s. not into banana in smoothies? Try mango or pineapple for a similar creaminess and sweetness. Also, be sure to check out our banana-free smoothies section below.

How to Freeze Spinach For Smoothies

Friends, whatever you do, don’t buy frozen (blanched) spinach and put it into your smoothies. The flavor will be ruined — you’ve been warned. BUT, if you want to make sure you always have spinach in the freezer and handy for smoothies, there is another way.

Get fresh baby spinach from the produce section and then transfer the container it comes in (or another sealed container) into the freezer. It will keep for about 1 month and is as easy as grabbing a handful whenever you’re making a smoothie. As long as you don’t use too much, you’ll add lots of nutrients without impacting the flavor. This technique also works for kale, chard, and mixed greens, but it’s best to avoid using bitter or strongly flavored greens.

Love your smoothie recipes and these tips are so helpful (you’ve inspired me to stop buying frozen spinach :) Quick question – Do you recommend de-stemming or washing greens (spinach, kale) before freezing?

Hi Carolyn! We’re so glad you’re feeling inspired! We always wash our greens, but if we are going to use them in smoothies we leave the stems on. Hope this helps!

Love your Protein Smoothies! Do you have a general recipe or guide for creating ones own Protein Smoothie (without Protein powder).

For example: Use veg of choice, Fruit of choice, seeds to add, liquids to add, sweetner options

I’m wanting to mix up the flavors but want that boost of protein and am not that into experimenting due to costs.
    Thanks for your help!

Amazing recipes! Most recipes have banana in them which I have an aversion to. Any suggestions for banana substitutions or perhaps can you share more banana-free options in the future?

Hi Amanda, Pineapple and mango are good options for adding sweetness and creaminess! Did you see this, this, this, this, and this? Hope one of those is what you’re looking for!

Spinach not kale? Curious about that (I succeed and in growing kale all summer as spinach evades my horticultural skills).

This is a great compilation. I made the traffic light smoothie with my 4 year old this morning – it’s the biggest smoothie serving he has ever devoured because he wanted to finish each colour! I loved it too – having a mixture of flavours to enjoy in one smoothie was really nice. Have printed off 7 or 8 recipes to keep close to the blender to vary up our daily smoothies. Thanks!
